Mr. Nick Hillman, the Programme Leader for English as a Foreign Language at Anglia Ruskin University, UK visited BBMS between the 3rd and the 5th of December 2008 to support the on-going academic collaboration between BBMS and Anglia Ruskin University (ARU).

Mr. Nick Hillman is responsible for the development and smooth running of all the non-credit bearing English language courses. He has an MA Applied Linguistics, with distinction, with particular focus on the good language learner and focus on form.  He teaches on undergraduate pathways as well as on the Language Teaching Methodology module of the Applied Linguistics MA. He has a distinction in the RSA Diploma and still teaches on the non-modular EFL courses. He has designed ESP courses for a wide range of subject areas (Oil and Gas industry, General Practitioners, Law, and Business).

BBMS English department gained valuable insights into the approach and methodologies of teaching English as a second language.   Mr. Hillman shared with BBMS ARU’s model for teaching and conducting its various ESL courses.  BBMS will take on his advice and adopt ARU’s multi-skilled ESL teaching system.  BBMS will be working closely with Mr. Hillman to continuously improve its ESL teaching standards and to develop new courses to meet the varied demands of students.

Mr. Hillman spoke to all the students and gave them a light-hearted introduction to British culture.  Students were particularly amused when Mr. Hillman showed them a picture of a typical “British breakfast fry-up”.  Mr. Hillman also had a lengthy discussion with a group of students about their plans to further their studies upon completion of their English courses. The students got an insight into student lifestyle, the estimated costs and the demands of university education in the UK.

BBMS benefited greatly from Mr. Hillman’s advice and his visit has further strengthened the school’s ties with Anglia Ruskin University.
